Birdhouse Blog

After a week of erratic behavior, I decided to clear out the birdhouse in hopes of new activity.
I took pictures as I removed the front of the house and used a spatula to remove the nesting material in one bulk. After removing the material, we placed it in a bowl and slowly dissected it and found no eggs whatsoever. That was a surprise. No egg shell remnants or anything.
So now the house is empty again. We hope that it will be occupied again and maybe will see a successful birth. Look for the photos at the link in the sidebar.

Arrived back home after being gone for less than a week. I've been watching what has been going on while I was away. I'm disappointed at the fact that the eggs are covered and the female hasn't taken much interest.
I added some time lapse video, showing the eggs being covered over. Check the movies link.

For reasons known only to itself, the bird is going over the nest in a frenzy.  It has covered the eggs up in the process.  I'm baffled at what the reason is.  Only time will tell.
The outside view is gone because we are on a trip and needed that camera.  It will be back when we get back on Tuesday.

This morning, I finally was able to get a close look at the male wren.  Instead of a Carolina Wren, it is a House Wren.
Since I had a Carolina Wren in the yard in late winter (which is in the photo page), I mistakenly thought it was it that took the house.  Since the colors are all muted by the IR camera, it was difficult identifying it.

Number six came later than usual, after 6am.  How far will this go?  Keep watching.

Just like clockwork, the fifth egg appeared this morning. I'm gonna run out of languages here.

Number four arrived this morning.  This is getting to be habit forming.

Egg #3 appeared this morning. After being gone all day long yesterday, she came in at around 7pm. We'll see when her mother instincts take over.

This morning the first egg appeared. Somewhere around 6 am it was first sighted. See a timelapse movie by clicking the "movie" link in the sidebar to the left.

Just a short note to say that since my first post about activity in #2, only a few more twigs were added.  I checked tonight and nothing more has happened.  I'm just happy that #1 is doing so well.  If anything more happens, you'll read it here.  (where else?)

I couldn't stand having a blurry image, so when I got home this evening at about 7:30, I climbed the ladder again. I saw that the nest was empty and removed the set screw that locked the focus. I was able to do this by swiveling the camera around until it pointed straight in the air. It was an awkward moment doing this on top of the ladder but by having my laptop outside with me, I was able to get it in better focus by looking down at the video as I was adjusting it.
That's it. No more messing with it. Now to see when the birds come back.

The amount of material brought into house #1 about 4 inches. Yesterday, I attempted to adjust the focus on the camera. One big mistake is that I kept the set screw on the lens tightened. So, with my big hams, I can't get in there to loosen it to adjust the focus. Hopefully, the level won't rise much higher. Mark this as another lesson learned.

The wrens have been very active on the nest in birdhouse #1 this morning. I took a look at the interior of #2 and saw a few twigs that weren't there yesterday. So we'll have to pay close attention to that too.
This mornings activity has made up for yesterday. It has been almost nonstop all morning. The amount of material brought in probably doubled what was already there. At this point you can see that it almost reaches the knot hole on the side wall.

Today I was kind of discouraged by the lack of activity all day. Since yesterday, the birds really haven't made much progress on the nest. However, by the time I got home in the evening there was a lot more material brought in.
As I sat at the iMac around 7pm, a wren came in for the night. It's amazing how one night it may come in late at night and another day it comes in before dusk. It must have had a rough day today. Fortunately, all this activity is captured automatically in the form of a movie. I will be editing it in the future so that all can see the evolution of our visitors.webcam47
